October-Domestic Violence Awareness Month

I’ve been struggling for a week with this post. I was going to post a story I wrote based on my experience, but I have a beginning and an end but no middle. It’s the middle that I have the hardest time with, it’s too triggering. One would think that after about 13 years of freedom I would have no issues left, but that’s not the case. So after stressing over my desire to post and my lack of ability, I decided to turn it into a positive post. I’ve taken what I believed during the 15 years with my ex-husband and listed what I’ve learned during my 13 years on my own. I may still post the story, it just may take me a while.

What I believed:

  • I’m stupid
  • I’m weak
  • I’m crazy
  • I’m a bad mother
  • I’m a bad wife
  • Not allowed to say “no”
  • Everything is my fault
  • I’m incompetent
  • I’m worthless
  • All my friends believe him
  • I’m alone
  • Life isn’t worth living

 

What I learned:

  • I’m smart
  • I’m stronger than I ever imagined
  • I have bipolar disorder but I’m not “crazy”
  • I’m a very good mother
  • I am a good companion to the right man
  • Marital rape is real
  • It wasn’t my fault
  • I’m very competent
  • I am not worthless
  • Nobody believed him
  • More people cared about me than I realized
  • Life is most definitely worth living

  1. I love this post Sheri, and I love that you know the things in the second list.
    Don't stress too hard about writing the middle; with something so hugely important it's better that you let it happen in its own time than trying to get it done just because it's the right month.
